KUDOS and THANKS

This is the first newsletter since Karen Gyolai shared this EXCELLENT news and sincere
thanks. I want to thank everyone for the prayers, cards, calls and good thoughts sent to both my husband, Jim Gyolai, and myself during his heart bypass journey. He finally had his double bypass in midJanuary. He has had a good recovery, looks great, and is beginning to do more. He
starts Cardiac Rehab this week (April). August update – Jim is still doing well and is through with his cardiac rehab. I appreciate all the prayers and cards to him and myself. It was truly appreciated. We are on a road trip this week. The support of our AAUW group has been amazing.
Thanks to all,
Karen Gyolai

President’s Message

Message from Marlene

“Having friends who inspire us to rise to higher and greater levels is an awesome gift. Surround yourself with women who inspire you to do better and inspire your friends as well. It is a profound truth that the people we spend time with shape the path that we travel. “

“Marlene’s Message”:
“Winter, a lingering season, is a time to gather golden moments, embark upon a sentimental
journey, and enjoy every idle hour.” John Boswell
What a busy season this is! I suspect most of us don’t have many idle hours, but hopefully we
will gather some golden moments. I guarantee there will be moments of joy and merriment at
our AAUW Holiday gathering on Saturday, December 10th. Alice Leeds and her life partner, Paul,
will once again host us at their festive and lovely home. Look for the details elsewhere in this
newsletter.
You all responded so generously to our Tony Bram drive to support the high school for girls in
Kenya. Find Sheila’s report … and be impressed. We are, indeed, making a difference in the lives
of these young ladies.
Did you know…
• That the Maryland State president of AAUW spent an evening with us in October? She was
impressed with our membership event, our fundraising efforts, and many of our other
initiatives. She suggested that we might want to host the state convention in 2023. Wouldn’t
that be exciting?
• That we now have 51 members! A warm AAUW welcome to our 2022 additions: Joanne
Baker, Denise Caraggio, Jacqueline Cunningham, Faye Fisher, Elizabeth Moser, Jodie Spears,
and Donna Zavacky. We hope you will jump right in to our meetings, activities, and initiatives.
We need your energy, ideas and friendships!
Kudos to:
• Hazel Hopkins and Laurie Feldman on organizing another successful silent auction. It brought
in $670 for our HCC Scholarship Fund! Thanks also, to all who contributed their treasures.
• Theresa Freligh for her fun tour of the historic (and haunted) Eden Grist Mill.
• Jeanne Blades for hosting another Fall Fun membership recruitment party.
• Bernadette Low and Peg Dymond for agreeing to review our by-laws. Stay tuned for possible
changes.
• Sheila Allen for leading the Toni Bram Scholarship drive to provide $1600 for Furaha’s All
Girls’ High School in Kenya.

Happy Birthday

This month marks AAUW’s 140th birthday—and members, supporters and staff celebrated in style. On Wednesday, November 17, AAUW National hosted a virtual event with more than 1,500 registrants, one of our largest-ever online gatherings! Among the festivities, we:

  • Showed a video highlighting the women who are part of our rich history and dynamic present.
  • Unveiled our distinguished 2021 AAUW Alumnae Recognition Awardee Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization, and shared CEO Gloria L. Blackwell’s extensive conversation with her.
  • Recognized AAUW affiliates marking their own milestones.
  • Kicked off our year-end giving campaign with an unprecedented match from AAUW’s board, volunteer leaders and staff. Donate now to have your gift matched up to $75,000!

We’ll make the event recording available as soon as possible in our webinar library. Meanwhile, enjoy the special 140th anniversary page we created for you on our website.
